  13. Software, is a very realistic flight
  14.  
  15. simulator. So much so that you can
  16.  
  17. become so absorbed in your 'flight'
  18.  
  19. that you feel that you are actually
  20.  
  21. flying.
  22.  
  23.   The lower portion of the screen
  24.  
  25. contains many of the instruments that
  26.  
  27. are found in the regular small plane
  28.  
  29. such as the air speed indicator,
  30.  
  31. altimeter, artificial horizon and
  32.  
  33. attitude indicator.  The pitch is
  34.  
  35. given in plus or minus numbers,
  36.  
  37. depending on if you are climbing or
  38.  
  39. descending.  The flaps can be at
  40.  
  41. either 20 or 40 degrees. The landing
  42.  
  43. gear light comes on when the wheels
  44.  
  45. are lowered.  There are also
  46.  
  47. indicator lights for the brakes and a
  48.  
  49. warning light that comes on if the
  50.  
  51. engine starts to overheat. The
  52.  
  53. throttle indicator shows ten
  54.  
  55. different settings.  Values of
  56.  
  57. vertical velocity either up or down
  58.  
  59. are given as well as the regular dial
  60.  
  61. display.  Besides a good compass there
  62.  
  63. are navigational instruments such as
  64.  
  65. ILS and VOR.  The VOR readouts give
  66.  
  67. bearings and distances of the plane
  68.  
  69. from the two VOR stations and so you
  70.  
  71. can plot your actual location while in
  72.  
  73. flight.  All the instruments are
  74.  
  75. functional and quite accurate.
  76.  
  77.   The sound adds a great deal to the
  78.  
  79. realism and the engine roar changes
  80.  
  81. with different throttle settings.
  82.  
  83. Climbing or diving also changes the
  84.  
  85. engine sound.  As you approach the
  86.  
  87. stalling speed, a warning gong sounds.
  88.  
  89.   You can learn to fly with an
  90.  
  91. instructor who prints directions on
  92.  
  93. the screen such as... turn left,
  94.  
  95. pull up, lower landing gear, and so
  96.  
  97. forth.  You have a choice of flying
  98.  
  99. in any one of three states.  Kansas
  100.  
  101. is the easiest because it's level and
  102.  
  103. Colorado being mountainous is the most
  104.  
  105. difficult.  The state of Washington
  106.  
  107. is in-between because it has both
  108.  
  109. mountains and level terrain.
  110.  
  111.   After a person masters his landings
  112.  
  113. and take-offs and learns how to fly
  114.  
  115. by instruments, he can select the Mail
  116.  
  117. Pilot game that is challenging and
  118.  
  119. exciting.  You may decide how much
  120.  
  121. mail you wish to carry and also the
  122.  
  123. amount of fuel.  The heavier the load
  124.  
  125. the harder the plane handles.  Again
  126.  
  127. there are different levels one can
  128.  
  129. select.  In the higher levels of
  130.  
  131. difficulty, you will have to contend
  132.  
  133. with deteriorating weather conditions
  134.  
  135. such as winds and poor visibility as
  136.  
  137. well as instrument failures or other
  138.  
  139. emergency conditions.
  140.  
  141.   The 15 page manual is very good and
  142.  
  143. has complete directions with maps and
  144.  
  145. illustrations of different instrument
  146.  
  147. landing approaches.
  148.  
  149.   My only criticism is that the
  150.  
  151. graphics could be better and some of
  152.  
  153. the motions smoothed out for even
  154.  
  155. greater realism.  Nevertheless, I'd
  156.  
  157. rate it EXCELLENT and it is certainly
  158.  
  159. worth the money.  Solo Flight is a
  160.  
  161. refreshing relief from the present
  162.  
  163. day deluge of war games.
